For all those impatient fencers who cannot wait till the DE tableau is produced, there is an easy way to figure out who you are going to be fencing in the first round of DE or indeed, if you did well enough in poule to get a BYE.

The formula is:

First Round of DE – your seeding after poules +1

First round of DE is the lowest power of 2 number equal to or larger than the number of fencers qualified into the DE

Your seeding after poules is the place you ended up on after poules

If the formula gives you number that is larger than the number of fencers qualified into the DE, it means you get a BYE

Example 1

There are 27 fencers that qualified into the DE. You are seeded 9th after poules.

First round of DE is the last 32 since this is the lowest power of 2 greater than or equal to 27

32 – 9 +1 = 24 which means in the first round of DE you will be fencing person seeded 24th after poules.

Example 2

There are 41 fencers that qualified into the DE. You are seeded 13th after poules.

First round of DE is the last 64 since this is the lowest power of 2 greater than or equal to 41

64 – 13 +1 = 52 which means in the first round of DE you will have a BYE as there are only 41 fencers in the competition at this stage.
